When we powered on the Commodore PET computer, the screen filled with random gibberish characters instead of the boot message, so we knew there was a problem. This behavior was mostly reassuring since it showed that the power supply, clock, video circuitry, and monitor all worked.

A closeup of the screen, showing random characters. Not just letter and numbers, but strange symbols such as card suits, gray rectangles, circles, and lines. Half the characters are black on white and half are white on black. (Actually more bluish than pure white.)
