My practical critiques still stand. But I do acknowledge that my bias is driven my moral critiques. Crypto is capitalism reified in the purest form we have yet seen. It is waste-driven consumption based on artificial scarcity for no other purpose than more capitalism.
@joelle_emerson ("Joelle Emerson") replied to a tweet by @joelle_emerson:
I still hear that I'm an inexperienced leader sometimes. I don't love it. That was true(ish) when I started Paradigm. But after 7 years and growing a team of over 50 people, I don't think it's true now. And I doubt men who've grown similar businesses get this feedback. 6/6
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
As I continue to interrogate myself, I know that's why crypto is so offensive to me. It takes something we invented that is actually abundant and treats it like it's not. And it does that entirely for the sake of enriching some people at the expense of others.
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
My ideology says something different. I believe there is a plateau of "more and better" that most people reach. Our continued consumption is driven by a small number of people who cannot be satisfied. Capitalists use scarcity to force us to feed their insatiable hunger.
@joelle_emerson ("Joelle Emerson") replied to a tweet by @joelle_emerson:
So, I dunno, if you find yourself critiquing someone for inexperience, it's worth getting specific about what "experience" would look like to you, and challenging yourself on whether you'd have a similar reaction to a similarly situated white guy. 5/
@joelle_emerson ("Joelle Emerson") replied to a tweet by @joelle_emerson:
An *extra* annoying thing is that I see these critiques often linger for quite some time, after the person has gained tons of experience. Founders may in a few years get experience that would take a decade to gain in any other context. 4/
@joelle_emerson ("Joelle Emerson") replied to a tweet by @joelle_emerson:
(As an aside, I'm calling this "unconscious" or "implicit" bias because in my experience, people who critique women in this way don't realize they're holding women to a different standard. That doesn't make the bias any less bad, it's just outside of our awareness.) 3/
@joelle_emerson ("Joelle Emerson") replied to a tweet by @joelle_emerson:
Obviously this isn't shocking given everything we know about unconscious bias. Because men align more to our stereotype of what a "leader" looks like, we're far less likely to scrutinize their qualifications in this way. 2/
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
Most people do want "better". But we have better and won't give it to them. People aren't asking to go to the Mars. They just want a house. Telling them you have to go to Mars and eventually it will result in them getting a house... maybe. That's where this bullshit falls apart.
@joelle_emerson ("Joelle Emerson") wrote:
An annoying critique I hear *all the time* about women founders is that they're "inexperienced" in leadership. I almost never hear this about similarly qualified men. (I imagine this is likely even more common for women of color.) 1/
