Then they tell you to fuck off because you don't know what you're talking about. Hence the stupid Twitter fight of the day. That's how it works. I watch it happen on here all the time. I ask people to be mindful of difference experiences and they don't understand what that means.

Right. And if you've never bought a house, you may not know this. So we end up talking past each other. If you don't understand what retirement expenses actually are, you might decide somebody who is struggling in retirement just made "bad decisions".

@cwhaught ("Christopher Haught") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
@polotek I think it's also important to note. When people talk about a mortgage they usually mean an escrow, which includes things like taxes and insurance. Those don't stop when the home is paid off. So, even if you have paid off your home when you retire you still have a monthly costs.

Facebook’s auto-moderation bots are laughable at their Nannyesque attempts to foil hate speech. Their false positive rate is hilariously bad. They still value engagement at any cost. It affords them visibility without any real reckoning or sacrifice.

like, this is not normal. its not inevitable. its not a 'complex issue'. and it has clear solutions that are less expensive than what we are doing now

This is why you hear the rhetoric about the death of "The American Dream". This is what it means. I don't mean to pick on Carlos, but his question illustrates how hard it is to change our thinking even while the world has already changed around us.

So let me be explicit. There is clear data that shows many, many Americans cannot afford a house and will not have a free a clear place to live when they retire. Now what?

I think it's weird that people assume there will be no mortgage or rent. There is a whole conversation in this country about how people can't afford to buy houses. You have to tie that directly to "you may not have a paid off house to live in when you are retired".
