Right. And if you've never bought a house, you may not know this. So we end up talking past each other. If you don't understand what retirement expenses actually are, you might decide somebody who is struggling in retirement just made "bad decisions".

@polotek I think it's also important to note. When people talk about a mortgage they usually mean an escrow, which includes things like taxes and insurance. Those don't stop when the home is paid off. So, even if you have paid off your home when you retire you still have a monthly costs.
