one of the things i am learning in our new project is how FUNNY the gospel of john is. the high comedy of jesus sulkily getting everyone trashed while his mom breezily blows past his tantrum is gold.

Chris Hayes shouldn't be calling this a "great example". Instead Hayes should use his platform and his privilege to deliver a different message. "We don't tolerate racism. We cannot make space for ideologies that produce messages like Gruden's."

People often tell me that I talk about what's wrong without talking about what better might sound like. I don't think that's true. I say it all the time and people act like they didn't hear it. But I'll say it again for the culture.

White Supremacy is a culture. It's not a mistake. It's not an aberration. It's not an individual personality quirk. It is a culture that passes from person to person through communication, communion, and community. You can see it if you look.

All racists have to do is not write it down and there would be no accountability for them. The problem is they can't even keep themselves from writing it down! Racism requires them to commune with reach other. That's how serious it is for them.

A lot of white people ask us to believe that racists can do their job without harming us so long as they don't about out loud that they hate us. They tell us that we can't tell that we're being harmed. Because otherwise there would be evidence. Like emails.

This speaks to my message from the other day about "thought crimes". The emails aren't the problem. The emails are evidence. They give us a reasonable expectation that Gruden brings active discrimination into his he engages with the Black and brown people around him.

It sends a message to everybody that wants to write emails like this. The message is "it's not your fault. We'll keep working hard to communicate with you in the right way. We just haven't found the right words yet. Just don't get caught."

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

And then we have people like @chrislhayes reinforce that by going "yeah this is the right way to talk about. We don't actually want to alienate the people who did the harm."

The reason it's not disqualifying is that this is how we have to talk about. We talk about who was harmed, but we can't talk about who did the harming. Nothing in this message talks about how we prevent people like Gruden from doing this.

Gruden was not confused when he wrote these emails. It wasn't "a different time". He's not "on the fringe of society". He's not "ignorant of people who aren't like him". None of that is true. He wrote those emails because racism is not disqualifying behavior in America.

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

Chris assumes that people who write emails like this can hear some nice words and go "oh, now I get it!"

That's just not fucking true. And we need to stop pretending it is. The fact that we see you keep pretending it's true is also part of why people of color can't trust you.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

Put another way, @chrislhayes still thinks this is a problem with finding the right wording. It's not.

One of the ideologies we're dealing with is "I should be able to send emails like this and still keep my job". That is not an ideology we're going to "come together" with.
