These systems were better than the previous generation of version control. Because they allowed an individual to work on their own code locally without disturbing others. It was only time to fight when you wanted to get your local code into the main repository.

The state of the art before git was tools like subversion and Perforce. They were “version control” systems in that they let you commit code so you could tell what changed. Companies ran their own version control servers. They broke all the time.

Even with all of the benefits, the overhead of implementing git was not worth it for the *vast* majority of teams and projects until GitHub came along. Git would not be what it is without GitHub.

@polotek I worked at a small company that ended up replacing SVN for git and it wasn't _directly_ the cause of the company going out of business but it definitely mucked up development enough that it never recovered.

Shout out to hg. It is true that it does what git does and in some cases better. But it didn’t have the same brand and ultimately lost in the battle for developer mindshare.

Anything else you’re trying to do with git is secondary and likely to be more trouble than it’s worth. The only occasional exception is git bisect, which is fucking awesome. But you only need it in 5% of cases.

Automatic resolution of merge conflicts. This was truly revolutionary for software development. It’s hard to convey. Before this you had to resolve conflicts manually. But instead of doing that, people would just fight so nobody was trying to touch the same file at the same time.

Decentralized structure. e.g. push/pull. Before this you had to copy around whole repos all the time. People mostly still adhere to the centralized server model. But combining this with lightweight branching meant it was way cheaper and easier to send around only changes.

Lightweight branching. Now we take it for granted. But before this, it was hard to develop different things in parallel. Git single-handedly turned “feature branching” from a niche practice that felt expensive into the standard.

To be fair, git is definitely overcomplicated. But like most things that become the new standard, the core benefits are worth the headaches.
