There’s plenty of people who will run full nodes for a given network as an act of charity/paranoia, but that’s not a requirement.
The only thing I can think of client-side where it’s a strict requirement is the Lightning Network, but that’s just evidence LN is a bad idea.

P2P software of the ‘00-‘09 decade worked that way, but one of the nice things about cryptocurrency is it allows clients to pay servers (e.g. validators, bridges)
