As a manager I try never to do the unprompted “are you free”.
Once someone forgot to cancel a 1:1 invite and I joined alone. I messaged them “zoom”. A ping in case they were “in the zone”.
Them, not remembering there was a meeting, definitely believed they were getting fired.
