This is a question that everyone has to answer for themselves. Talking about it as one answer is not reasonable. This is a huge country with wildly different socio-economic factors in different places. We have to stop pretending we're all having the same conversation.

@polotek Is that $100k a year realistic? Big assumptions, but, 1/3rd of income on housing and 1/3rd on savings is somewhat typical. By retirement you hopefully own your house and don’t need to save or make pension contributions as you’re not earning. Also hopefully no child expenses.
