No joke, so many discussions that are had about social/political/systemic issues get derailed because one of the participants has attached their identity to the topic in question, and then any criticisms feel like a personal attack to them.

People desire to be told they aren't bad and can't cause harm/support harmful systems. It causes an existential crisis that often resolves by blaming the person who makes them feel bad; IE a marginalized person.
