small victory: upgraded my linux machine to the latest ubuntu LTS and sorted out the nvidia display issues that plagued the prior attempt. (tldr gdm3 + proprietary nvidia drivers = :(, replace w/ lightdm & lightdm-gtk-greeter to get login screen working)
