feel like the idea that trans activism primarily aims to 'make issues taboo' rather than fight for healthcare, an end to violent policing, etc just props up right wing efforts to force us to debate on completely unproductive terrain

I think the big risk taken in lots of trans activism atm (& common to lots of left discourse) is to try and make issues taboo before there is any sort of societal consensus on them. It creates a massive potential for backlash.
