It bears repeating that jails, like Rikers, are generally where you go BEFORE you go to trial. No one should be incarcerated, but it’s especially heinous that we subject people to this pre-trial

Every single day in a pretrial cage is extremely dangerous. Half of all jail deaths, including suicides, occur within the very first week. And about a third of sexual violence by jail staff happens within the first three days of pretrial detention.
