This ICSE 2021 paper is very neat and confirms that yes, it is incredibly difficult to write a correct clobber list for gcc inline asm – less than half (49%) of the 2,656 assembly chunks they analyzed across 202 Debian packages were correct! https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.07485
