Back before cell phones took over all telephony, we had land lines and you would typically have a local service and a long distance service (in the US). I never signed up for a long distance service. Instead I would use a pre-paid phone card as my long distance service. For various reasons I preferred it. After I got a cell phone, I stopped using it. A gift to AT&T. :/
