if you're using ascii you just need to add 0x30 to your bcd digits. In the original Super Mario Bros, the number characters are right at the start of the pattern table so they don't even need to offset them.

When I first heard about binary coded decimal it sounded like such an eccentric feature, and then the second I actually touched real live 6502 assembly I realized how amazing it is on a computer without multiply/divide instructions to have a way to directly operate on display-ready representations of numbers
