I'm a big fan of machine-readable metadata. It's useful for programs which need to extract information from messy and complicated websites. It's always surprising where it turns up. For example, take this post of mine on LinkedIn. If you view the source, you'll see this scrap of linked data: <script type="applicati…

★★★★☆

This is a modern Arabian Nights. Eight Middle Eastern tales of adventure and magic, infused with a startling modernity. I loved the world-building in this. The creeping horror in some of the tales was offset by the delicious exploration of what it means to inhabit a world with Djinn. Interestingly, it seeme…

@futurebird @siderea Unchecked corruption. Their logistics are constantly weakened by corrupt supply NCOs selling things on the black market - food, fuel, and so on. Recruits are able to bribe their way out of hard training. Lack of supplies mean exercises are hollow and meaningless, and training is curtailed (no ammo). Substance use is rampant, thus absenteeism is also.

Morale is, predictably, quite poor, and there is no sense of unit cohesion. These are militarily death sentences for a unit and its soldiers. Unit cohesion is crucial - soldiers fight for their friends beside them, if they have any. With no unit cohesion, they won't fight as well, if they fight at all.

Basically, Putin's government got the army it deserved, one just as corrupt and useless as it is.

ISW analysis:

“Suggestions that Prigozhin’s rebellion, the Kremlin’s response, and Lukashenko’s mediation were all staged by the Kremlin are absurd. The imagery of Putin appearing on national television to call for the end of an armed rebellion and warning of a repeat of the 1917 revolution – and then requiring mediation from a foreign leader to resolve the rebellion – will have a lasting impact. The rebellion exposed the weakness of the Russian security forces...”

We never do that! We choose the tool we know or like and then rationalize its fitness for the job.

ok so that Sandbox Generator book led me into the world of solo tabletop rpgs.

I tried playing Alone Against Fear yesterday but I'm not sure if I'm gonna finish the first mission. Despite being a tabletop game, it's very table-based in a way that lends itself to automation. Early on I ran into a group of 9 zombies and then a group of 6 possessed humans and as I sat there doing dozens of "dodge" rolls I kept thinking this could have been a twine game

If you thought I was past my boring bodymod post phase, guess again!

I recently went up to 2g in my septum and it happened like it always does: I found a 2g ring that I liked and bought a pair for my ears. Then when they got here I was like, "I wonder if I could wear this in my septum"

I forgot that when you go up a size, you have a grace period of a few days before your nose realizes what happened and gets mad at you. So now I'm just waiting for it to calm down again
