A friend of mine died this week unexpectedly. We hadn’t talked in a while and I felt awkward about texting, but was reminded to reach out two weeks ago. Stupidly (selfishly), I put it off. Our mobile app reaches out to a microservice api to get a list of pixelfed instances that are open and meet reqs, it's basically just a cached response of another microservice running on fedidb.

Another example is https://beagle.pixelfed.net, our new discovery and auth service, will be sharing more in a future blog post ✨

Hi, Mastodon Peeps,

I have this week's blog post ready.

Missouri v. Biden is, at heart, a dispute about content moderation on social media.

It’s also about whether right-wing conspiracy theories about Covid, vaccines, and the election should be allowed to spread unchecked and unchallenged.

This case matters because many (if not most) of the difficulties we are having now in holding on to democracy come from the way people get their information.

@GottaLaff

One issue I plan to write about is the very problem of news as entertainment.

Timothy Snyder says when news becomes entertainment, what matters is who puts on the best show. Truth stops mattering. It's all about the us v. them fight.

It's a continuation of what I wrote this weekend. I think it's a serious problem with lots of roots and no easy solution.

Yesterday, tens of thousands of tweets falsely linked this video of a fire in France with rioting, and said that Macron had banned reporting. As the official French alert clarifies, it is not related to any riot.

The video was first tweeted from an account in South America - odd considering it's news about France - so I did a Google reverse image search for the source.

The *only* result: Russia Today in Spanish.
