If it only had "Guys Like Me" and "Lost In Space", Aimee Mann's "Lost In Space" would still be on continual rotation for me...but JFC..."The Moth"? Melts me every time. And I'm reliably informed that nobody else likes these songs, but love, e.g. "Pavlov's Bell" and "Humpty Dumpty". Wildly talented.

A tremendous number of words have been written—many of them by yours truly—about why we should, or should not, have required licensure for computer programmers. I think I’ve realized that we have been asking the wrong question. The real question is whether we ought to require licensure for *operating computer networks of sufficient scale*. The programming is a red herring.

What skills do you think should be on that list?

I think I need an alternative to meetup.com.

Meetup charges you $100 every 6 months and I don't really have meetups for half the year - no acoustic jams outside during the cold months.

I suppose Facebook is an alternative but their interface is so frustrating.

I'd go with Discord but I don't think the folks who attend my meetup would use that (older crowd).

I suppose I could try to build something myself but that would still need to be hosted somewhere for a cost.

Any suggestions?

This is what drove most of the changes to software dev over the past decade. The purpose of React and code copilots both is to let managers replace specialists with a CADT while still maintaining consistent output https://ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/the-failed-commodification-of-technical-work/

Murdoch's route really captures that feeling of being in your 20s and kind of at loose ends: stumbling into a job from someone you hooked up with, getting semi-publicly high out at the lake with a couple of guys who have Opinions on the nature of reality, going to someone's house and finding yourself in a minefield of someone else's strained family relationships, etc

BTW if you find yourself in a situation where you don't know where your DNS server moved to:

sudo nmap --script broadcast-dhcp-discover

Can be helpful. I have needed to use that more frequently than seems reasonable, (assuming a well functioning environment).

OK I take it back, Safari might be the new IE: https://github.com/nolanlawson/emoji-picker-element/pull/379

The WebKit team has been doing amazing work recently, but it doesn't help users stuck on old versions of the OS.

E.g. Safari 16.4 was a massive release from back in March, but about a third of Safari users are still on <=16.3. This accounts for 6.5% of *all* browsers! https://caniuse.com/mdn-api_elementinternals

I know the solution is "just buy a new iPhone," but how much e-waste is that going to generate? And how many people can afford it?
