There are a lot of reasons renaming Twitter to X was really stupid, and this doesn't even crack the top 10, but: in a list, it just looks like a typo. It doesn't fit in at all.

Typographically, I want to just say "Twitter" to actually balance it with the others, instead of having one item with a single character awkwardly dangling there.

The amount of meta employees, meta-affiliated lobbyists, and venture capitalist with dubious ties to Meta running around Mastodon undetected is WILD.

I'm sure the average Mastadonian isn't aware, but there is zero chance that Fediverse and Indie Web leaders don't know the extent in which we are being nudged on this app.

In my opinion, it's a huge breach of trust and and an abuse of influence to allow this to continue.

@carnage4life@mas.to It's also interesting how little discussion there is of the #Meta's played in this by hiring Republican lobbyists to attack #TikTok https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/03/30/facebook-tiktok-targeted-victory/

I think people who believe that selling TikTok to someone in the U.S. will make it safer for U.S. users have a really screwed up threat model.

So, a follow up on this. Wizards reached out to me today & we jumped on a call. They thanked me for being vocal about it, they agreed, & they reiterated their commitment as company to continue supporting human creativity & to not use AI. So that's good to hear.

We say we want a web that goes beyond the ad-stuffed keyword-optimized blogs, but when someone dares tries something different, some of us react like this.

I don't write for praise. I was well aware that my writing styles aren't for everyone. But most of these comments by grown adult men, have the spirit of a vindictive twelve year old boy.

I hate to dwell on this because I've had more people reach out with kind words, but this is wild.

Anyway, I wrote about how companies like Meta are positioning itself to sell us the next iteration of the web: computing power consumption

Consumption is why they try so hard to sell use on computing hungry tech. Consumption is why #Llama is on Github for free.

Twitter is dying. TikTok is about to be banned. Meta has its claws deep into Mastodon and ActivityPub. Social media as a whole is shifting towards becoming a hostile place for dissenting voices and activists.

TikTok is not without its flaws. And there may come a time when the tool proves not as useful anymore.

But in this moment, right now, TikTok is the move. If we lose this platform, those who live on the margins will be worse off for it.

Here's the good news— it's not too late. We can change our minds after receiving new information. We don't have to dig our heels into the sand.

The lines that divides us are not digital. It is now and have always been a divide of class and wealth.

So pay attention to those who like to highlight factions among us. Those people are out there every day dancing between the space between us we've made.

We should be checking in with our Black, Indigenous and Latine activists, with our LGTBQA activists, and ask _them_ how a TikTok ban or seizer affects the movement. Because some of the BEST social justice work is happening on #Tiktok right now.

Instead, we've decided for them that they can start fresh somewhere else. The irony of saying that on Mastodon where POC are not provided w a platform is nuts.

We have lost our way and our minds. We should be uniting right now.

I knew we didn't have solidarity with each other. Like, I get that Americans have this innate hatred for working class folks. But rarely have I seen it manifested as strongly as this looming Tiktok seizure.

People are tripping over themselves to let the world know how elated they are that this will disrupt our ability to organize and disperse information. And it's happening in the name of some weird digital nationalism where we think we're better because of the platform we use.
