This is my favorite photo for demonstrating the impact of #LightPollution on physiology. The image was taken by shows a soybean field illuminated by a badly directed streetlight.
What's happening here is that soybeans are supposed to grow leaves in the early part of summer, and as nights get longer, they should make #soybeans and turn brown. In the green area, the plants don't understand what time of year it is, and it's therefore a complete loss for the farmer.
The reason I love the photo so much is because you can see the shadow of the light mast on the field.
The photo was taken by Dwaine Eddie McGriff & Ben Tankersley, and originally posted to Xitter (the post no longer exists).
The problem could be entirely solved by using a streetlight with strong backlight shielding (i.e. shining the light only on the roadway).

I've nerdsniped myself into finding faster approximation of cube root (needed for Lab #color space)
- polynomial approximations alone are not sufficient for x < 0.2. Not even big ones, blended, nor Padé.
- bit-twiddling tricks don't vectorize, and/or need exp2 that is expensive itself. In the end I've found that a simple polynomial + 2× Halley's Rational Method is unbeatable. Precise. Autovectorizes nicely. 2.5× faster than std. 5× faster in batches of four.

For sure. People must demand their representatives vote against absolutely all Trump administration legislation and proposal, NO MATTER WHAT that legislation is. Do not allow ANYTHING to move forward without EVERY Democrat voting in opposition each and every time. When needed, don’t give them a quorum. Filibuster continuously. Oppose everything. Raise absolute hell. Fight them. Stoo them. Absolute no bipartisan cooperation. Don't give these fascists an inch.

"The new mayor began his term by tackling the 1,500 annual traffic-related deaths in the city. He seemed to abide by an old theater saying: If the show isn’t going well, send in the clowns. Ever the political performer, Mockus did just that.
"The mayor gave 1,800 traffic cops the boot and hired a meager clan of 20 mimes. Armed with nothing but signs that read correcto and incorrecto, the silent troupe theatrically mocked lawbreakers and applauded polite motorists. A system purely based on public approval was on trial in Mockus’s so-called classroom. And it worked.
“Rather than strength or physical violence to get people to cross the street in the right place, he used behavioral change—and this was powerful,” says Paulius Yamin, a behavioral scientist and Mockus’s former research assistant. “There are not always going to be police on every corner, but there are always citizens, and people care about what others think about them.”
"The 20 mimes quickly expanded to 420. …"

I've been reading a decent amount of history lately, and it's interesting the extent to which a lot of Trump's behavior feels like a throwback to the colonial era. Not because of colonialism exactly, but just, going to a word that's less liberal international, more quid-pro-quo anarchy. Like if it's 1930, forcing a teetering Republic to give up mineral resources for protection probably doesn't feel so weird. It's just the business of the state.
