Gains should be stated as specifically as possible for the area addressed: simple sabotage will hasten the day when Commissioner X and his deputies Y and Z will be thrown out, when particularly obnoxious decrees and restrictions will be abolished, when food will arrive, and so on.

A nostalgic meme featuring three iconic 2000s gadgets arranged on a white background. At the top, bold black text reads “Our pockets were heavy, but our souls were free.” Below are a mint green iPod nano with its characteristic click wheel and small rectangular screen, a hot pink Motorola Razr flip phone displaying “12:34 AM” on its external screen, and a pink Sony Cyber-shot digital camera with a protruding lens. The devices are positioned in a triangular arrangement, evoking the era when carrying multiple gadgets was the norm before smartphones consolidated everything into one device.

It's because many liberals (not all) have conditional support for marginalized groups themselves based on their personal comfort. So they're projecting that onto Trump, as if Trump isn't already taking control.

I love the look on their faces when I ask. "What training program are you running?" or "how many juniors are you hiring?"

Companies expect to be able to hire experienced, trained staff, but don't want to put any effort into actually training them.

This is a problem across so many industries. It's not an easy one to solve.

People think that if you want to start making whatevers in your location, you buy a bunch of CNC machines, and hit start. But none of that works without staff.

This year's DLS Most Notable Paper award goes to:

Compiling for Multi-language Task Migration
by Marc Feeley

This paper is motivated by the challenges of implementing continuations for an uncooperative environment, and worth a read!

Congratulations to the author!

https://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~feeley/papers/FeeleyDLS15.pdf

Screenshot of the award with a citation that reads: Recent years have seen a resurgent interest in the use and implementation of first-class control, especially in the form of delimited continuations via effect handlers. This paper is motivated by the challenges of implementing continuations for an uncooperative environment and the opportunities for code migration that the implementation affords. The paper recaps the design of the Gambit Virtual Machine for efficient continuations, and it provides evidence for the ongoing effectiveness of the design.

In honour of my new baby and in honour of not supposed to be working, over the next few weeks I'm going to post this short story called 'Fledgling' I made for my patreon 2 years ago. This is part 1/14.

Sounds of laughter come from a oriole nest, hanging suspended from a branch. There are three chicks speaking to each other. "That is the PERFECT impression of mom!" says one chick to another. "Thanks, it's all about the anxiety" it replies. The third chick, let's call her Fledgling for the purposes of the alt text, says "Ok ok! Who am I? 'Hi kids! Here, have some warm bug mush'". One sibling responds "She just did mom" The other joins "Choose someone else". Fledgling looks lost and thinks to herself "but I don't know anyone else". To be continued! This is just part one of fourteen.

I've been at several protests where militarized police showed up and did their best to escalate tensions and encourage violence.

Once in Atlanta, just driving, I saw no less than fifty cop cars speed down neighborhood streets to engage with 30 protesters. You would've thought there was a terrorist attack.

The goal is violence so they have an excuse to attack. #ICE #LAProtests

Tech people must resolve to treat Palantir employees in their spaces - conferences, meetups, hackathons, etc - identically to how they would treat the masked gun-brandishing irregular-uniformed gestapo out there right now arresting every latina mother and child they feel like.
Palantir are the computer job counterparts of those thugs and one wouldn't exist without the other, and they should experience 100% identical social consequences.
