🇯🇵 Japan has officially banned Apple’s iOS browser engine restrictions.

Starting Dec 2025, iPhones must allow real Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Brave, Vivaldi and others to run their own engines, just like on desktop.

This is a major step forward for browser competition.

A precautionary warning about the @doaaalbaz0 Mastodon account at https://mas.to/@doaaalbaz0 that claims to be a journalist in Gaza.

The account followed me and immediately sent a DM. It appears to have done so to others as I saw two failed DMs with exact same text. Talked to them here and gave them my Signal. Asked them on Signal if they could add their Mastodon account to their Instagram bio as a means of verification as we’ve just had another journalist impersonated here.

No reply and I got blocked here.

I’ve contacted +972 magazine who she has written for to see if they can get in touch and ask her. (She has an Instagram but I don’t so I can’t contact her there. If someone else can, please do, but please coordinate among yourselves in the replies before doing so so she doesn’t get a dozen messages but just one.)

In the meanwhile, please exercise caution.

Unlike the other account, this one doesn’t have a donation URL but might be asking for personal info, etc., in direct messages.

anger and fear are very valid emotions to feel in the current political situation* but trying to build a movement out of them leads to burnout and brittle, polarized communities. joy and connection lead to individual flourishing and community resilience

* actually all emotions are always valid but these are especially common and understandable right now

A photo of a Macintosh PowerBook 150s on a desk. The display is two portrait monitors next to one another, and below that a keyboard, with two trackballs and associated buttons below the keyboard. It looks suspiciously like a normal PowerBook 150 but extra sideways.

What if you could quantify misery in a way that could forecast the consumer behavior phenomenon of the little treats meme?

If there was a correlation between Trump saying on the news things that made Americans anxious, and the amount of twenty dollar smoothies sold that day, you could create a misery index; a misery index of little treats.

And if you can quantify misery, then you could assist the driving engine of that consumer behavior.

Good night.

With apologies to XKCD.

The same comic as XKCD 2347, with the text changed. The image shows a complex set of variously sized blocks of different rectangular shapes stacked intricately upon one another. Near the bottom right, there is a gap in the vertical arrangement, with a single narrow block holding up the entire right half of the structure. At the top, a grouping bracket indicates the majority of the structure, and is labeled "The robust business operations of the world’s largest companies". In the lower right, an arrow points to the single block holding up the structure, and is labeled "A bunch of VLOOKUPs connecting some Excel spreadsheets". Beneath the entire image is the text "Adapted from XKCD 2347 under CC BY-NC 2.5 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/".
