Liquid Glass is not an aberration. It’s continuation of everything Apple has been getting wrong about UI for more than a decade.

Apple was never perfect, but they used to get things right more often than anyone else, and right or wrong they sweated over the details.

Now Apple is average at best, and they’re lazy (these two characteristics are not unrelated). You might say that Apple is lazy despite endless profit, but I would say that Apple is lazy due to endless profit.

The 'Fork Off' Test

One of the big reasons decentralization matters is the 'fork off' test that #Bluesky CEO Jay Graber memorialized in her 'No Caesars' marketing blitz (https://observer.com/2025/03/bluesky-ceo-jay-graber-wants-world-without-caesars/). Simply stated, what's the mobility within the network should any one member be lost, become evil or otherwise corrupted?

Can you really move?

Now, Bob Riccie's @ricci 'Are We Decentralized Yet?' (https://arewedecentralizedyet.online/) quantifies centralization using sophisticated data analysis and analytics.

Chart showing Bluesky vs. Fediverse centralization according to the Shannon Index analytic. While the Fediverse is very decentralized the ATmospher is not.

I gotta admit, I am loving how little of the conversation is just "BlueSky bad! Mastodon good! 🤡" and how much of it is "BlueSky is not ideal for Black users, but let's be for real, neither is Mastodon. We don't have control over BlueSky, but we do have some agency with Mastodon. How can we make Mastodon better? Where are we with improving the issues that make this place unwelcoming for Black users? Clearly, more Black users chose BlueSky than Mastodon. Have we addressed the reasons why?" ♥️🥹

Seriously, I count ~5 conversations in the improvement framing direction. I love to see it! Shame on me for having lower expectations.

I'm unapologetically backing improvements across ActivityPub and ATProto. I back Hachyderm/Mastodon and BlackSky. You can just back both teams! Nothing in the rules says you can't do that!

Re: Smart Glasses

Last year, I tried—and failed spectacularly because I'm not a mathematician—to come up with an equation to determine how many Americans would need to wear smart glasses in order to effectively surveil all (most) Americans.

Lots of assumptions packed in:
- always on camera
- average time outside
- average unique people in eyesight each outing etc etc

Is it 20%? 10% 5??? 1?????

Is the equation possible?
