a thing i have found younger researchers of the late 90s internet don't really appreciate is the number of ephemeral websites made by literal children. i was 12/13/14 making websites on freehosts for fun and i knew easily a dozen other people my age doing the same. the person who hosted the forum i was part of in high school started it at 15 on a server under his bed. there was no concept of age verification. if you had an internet connection and lax parental supervision you were good to go.

(this post is not about the utterly inane age verification laws nor is it about porn. it is about the very often ignored contributions of young people to culture.)

from my posting frequency i'm pretty sure the vyvanse has taken effect, so i'm going to leave you all this morning with an ADHD pro-tip:

If you have to do _two things_ nearby each other, but you're going to have to do them one at a time, *do the one that is less likely to give you feedback that you forgot it* FIRST.

Eg you go into the bathroom; you have to pee and you have to brush your teeth. Brush your teeth first, because if you forget to pee your bladder will remind you soon!

In the hallway, have to feed the cats and shuffle laundry? Shuffle laundry first, cause if you forget to feed the cats they WILL remind you!

what do you mean "if I dont have a tostada shell." The recipe includes tortillas. And oil. And a pan and a stove. How would I get to this stage and have tortilla chips but not tortillas. They are all tortillas. This is not how substitutions work, you can't just say "if you don't have x, just use x"

The crispy tostada is used to separate the hot (beef/cheese) from the cold (lettuce/tomatoes). If you don’t have a tostada shell, swap it out for tortilla chips. Break off any sharp corners so they don’t rip the tortilla as you fold it.

Besides all those very valid points, his explanations themselves are not very good.

Lots of 'do this for your render to look better' without going into even a basic explanation of what it actually does.

I used to teach Blender at a local college, and I always had to pay close attention to students who saw his content because they would think they know far more than they actually did, and then panic when they realize they're behind the rest of the class.

More people should be aware of what communities they straddle. Very few people are in only one, though I think being an actual participant in many is rare.

But our community shapes our understanding of the world so much. We'd do well to be aware of the ones we're in, and how much of our thought process is _social_ cognition.

It is, while completely expectable, still surprising to me that when I talk about software on here and particularly services like Github, all the replies assume I'm doing open source work only or primarily.

I do wonder if this shapes a lot of the thoughts about AI on Mastodon. It's a niche group. (Remember approximately 3% of developers contribute to open source!)

Happy 🌎 ☄️ 🦖 ☠️ Day (Celebrated)!

What's 🌎 ☄️ 🦖 ☠️ Day? Well it's my made up holiday celebrating the fact that we know that the meteor impact that caused the KT extinction event happened sometime in late May/early June. The official holiday date is the 8th of June. The celebration happens on the nearest weekend date.

Details of celebration to follow, but the great part of made up holidays is you get to make up your own traditions without insulting anyone's family.

I encourage everyone to try and make up your own holidays, but if you want to steal this one, please do.

I think I'll share some of my old sketches and other videos here?

Okay so here's the context: it's 2020, smack dab in the middle of the pandemic lockdown. At the time I was a bit of a sneaker head who spent a lot of time on the sneakers subreddit 😬 lol.

There was a contest to make the best sketch about sneakers and the lockdown, so I submitted this video.

I honestly can't remember who won? I think I was in the mix somewhere. I just can't remember, that whole era is a fever dream.

The 2010s liberal movement will age so poorly. It's going to be criticized for its hyper fixation on identity politics while still being surprisingly racially segregated. I think the Professional Managerial Class paradigm gets really close to articulating that era, but the defining critique is still yet to be achieved.

It'll come in the form of a stand up comedy special or movie, and it's going to explode in popularity because there's just so much documentation of the era and it's bad.
