Instead the UK government should target the root cause of online harms.

That means tackling the business model of social media platforms – from targeted ads and algorithms to user lock-in.

TIL from Sir David King, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government, that last year’s global loss and damages due to climate and biosphere destabilisation were around $500 billion.

But latest projections in his team’s Planetary Solvency Plan assessment are that on our current path, loss and damages will rise by 2050 to

$10,000 bn to
$15,000 bn per year.

In other words, a 10% to 15% drop in global GDP *every year*.

Meanwhile, we have politicians still talking about growth 🙄

This is a VERY CLEAR attack on open source projects. Why would random people be registering domains en masse for popular open source projects that (currently) only redirect to the authoritative home?

Why? Because they're building search engine credibility. Once the attackers have gained enough credibility, they will pull the bait and swap to an attack payload at the domain.

Exercise EXTREME caution with your internet searches.

this story is a little cringe but please forgive me, I was 20 at the time.

In a university course called Perspectives on Environmental Awareness, which was very much an optional elective, one day the professor asked the class: why are you in college? This is not an exaggeration, 29 of 30 students said "to get a good job and make money." I, the lone idiot, said "to make the world a better place."* I think about this all the time, especially as I watch my peers embrace fascism

Just finished my run through ziglings[1]: First impression: when Andrew Kelly says he wanted a simpler language than Rust, I understand what he means, and why it's simpler for him. But just taking #zig at face value, it's not simple at all. How many ways to describe an array? How many kinds of "empty" values? How many lines of code to open a file?

What I'm saying is, a low-level language can't really be simple these days.

But! I do like the absence of inheritance. And I do like built-in SIMD.
