Now she's looking more at the camera, still with an extrememely blank expression

Its been said to death, but the thing that LLMs do that's useful for programming is basically serve as an extremely lossy compressed index to all the code in the training set while making it look like a miracle that you are creating. If we instead had an actual search index where I can search for related code in an abstract AST space, see prior implementations in their context with proper attribution, compare where mine and their differ, that would be about a billion times more useful than an LLM for code. Something like the Wikimedia algorithm library would be a better tool than an LLM if it had the same amount of money poured into it, but it wouldn't get that money because it doesn't launder authorship or make you feel like a special genius.

fedi friends, I need some advice for how to emotionally/neurologically self-regulate a bit better when in a period of severe physical disability.

I'm spending a lot of time bed- and housebound due to broken sleep, hypersomnia and fatigue, and it's making it hard for me to cope emotionally with other stress. My normal strategy is to go for walks or scooter rides and get moving out in nature, but this is episodically not available to me due to fatigue and sleepiness.

Folks, I think we're now past the time where we can claim to be in the middle about generative AI usage.

You're either for it and okay with intellectual theft, racism, land grabs, polluted water, higher power bills, and creating an addicted population that can't think.

Let alone the building of new polluting coal/oil/gas power plants and even of millions-of-years-of-long-term-damage-and-destruction nuclear power plants, including the destruction of "one of the most green and vibrant ecosystems in Iceland", as Bjaldur noted.

Oh, and the systematic exploitation of humans in mostly "the global south" for the sorting and tagging of the thieved works ("training data"), exposing them to the absolute worst of things found online, mostly in darknets.

And the eso-fascism of the TESCREAL ideology behind it, active haters of humanity.

I probably could continue. There’s just so much wrong with all of the current genAI/LLM and things built around it…

Or you're against it.

Full quote from Rachel "Red Pen" Lapidow, repeated here (and added to) so I can pin it.

I still think "AI tool" is either a contradiction, or a way to describe the sloperator

Hot take: Docker is popular for the same reason AI is.

You don’t have to learn to set up the stuff yourself… just use someone else’s work.

A few more reasons to avoid the fashtech thingy: (some newer added at the end)

Big Tech's plan for human genocide and eugenics

"Sam Altman defends AI’s energy toll by saying it also takes a lot to ‘train a human’"

US Copyright Office found AI companies sometimes breach copyright. Next day its boss was fired

(We’re at about 31k characters already. At some point, I will move the top of the list, between the intro post and the bottom of the list, into a separate post (a reply to this post) to make space. Why the top of the list, not the bottom? Because I append at the bottom, so this post is the one people interacted with (favourite, boost) to get edit notifications.)

Does this knife style have a particular name?

It was bought for me in 1983 from the Wangaratta Co-op store when I was about to move to Bundoora and start uni. The knife is branded Stern and was "Designed in Germany", whatever that means.

> Girl itself evolved in much the same way. The word originally referred to a child of either sex. Back then, prior to the sixteenth century, girls generally were divided into knave girls, which were boys, and gay girls, which were female girls.

EDIT: I added context, because it may have sounded like I was joking originally. It really is a really thing. boys used to be knave girls and girls used to be gay girls

I did forget one tiny final step after last night’s social.lol migration, which is rebuilding home feeds. Also, we just passed 11 hours of uptime on the new server (omg.lol’s first ever dedicated box, btw!) and everything has been rock solid!
