Are you old and/or weird enough to want the [Insert] key to actually toggle between insert and overwrite modes on Emacs? I have a function for you.

Like they are not the problem, they exist in the normal computer user ecosystem that hides all that from them. If you want to make accessible software that is the level you need to provide a scaffolding for. People are smart, they just might not have cared as much about computing as you have, so if you want them to see the divine light of your thing, you need to throw the ladder down way further than you think.

I have a hard time sometimes in conversations with FOSS people about what making software that is accessible to non-programmers looks like, because sometimes people start talking to me about like features in obscure languages and packaging and distribution systems and so on, but in a workshop our lab ran recently one major blocker was "not knowing about the existence of the filesystem" and "have never seen a path as a string before and do not know how that relates to a file picker menu"

The #ScottishGreens are doing a campaign to prevent the buildout of new hyperscaler #DataCentres in #Scotland. There are 24 new sites proposed in Scotland, potentially adding up to 6000MW of power.

For comparison: This level of power, if run continuously for a year, would result in 52.6TWh of energy consumption, which rival Google's consumption in 2025 (https://ketanjoshi.co/2026/07/01/googles-exponential-path-to-climate-wrecking-digital-bloat/)

I highly recommend supporting the campaign, you can do so at https://greens.scot/datacentres

As Mastodon and other platforms onboard to RFC 9421, the availability of an interoperable specification should allow them to prioritize ML-DSA over, e.g., RSA.

One of the barriers to producing a true large format digital back is that there are almost no modern large format lenses that can compete with the resolving power of the best current medium format digital lenses. So having a real system would require producing not just a large sensor, but also new lenses that could do it justice. And I don't even want to think about what such a system would cost.
