I’ve heard all sorts of “AI” anthropomorphisations, including “AI”-centric vernacular used to replace common phrases (“I blanked” → “my brain dropped some tokens”; I don’t even).

@emilymbender and Nanna Inie have a great guide on how to speak about “AI” without amplifying capabilities and humanity it doesn’t have.

Frustration is very often what learning feels like. Don’t be afraid if you’re frustrated. Don’t feel like there’s something wrong with you if you’re frustrated.

Now frustration and zero progress and just stuck and spiraling…that is not learning anymore. Take a break. Take a nap. Seek out help. Get unstuck!

BUT: when you first encounter frustration, yay! Maybe important learning is about to occur.

And I can tell you that when I am learning a new technology I still feel like the dumbest newb on the planet. I make tons of mistakes. I go down stupid rabbit holes of my own making. I have tons of self doubt.

So give yourself some grace. Everybody goes through this phase. Take a deep breath. Believe that you can do this.

tbc i am not forsaking python, it is still the tool that fits for like 90% of human shaped things i want to do. but for the other cases where i genuinely need to have lots of control over what is happening it's good to have another thing to reach for. but i also want to see more and more languages because it's obviously changing the way i think about how to design things already. metaphors are important.

after two weeks of actually learning rust by writing something, i am kicking myself for not doing this sooner. a bunch of concepts that i have wanted are already here and i have just been fighting python without having them for awhile. the concurrency dog. being able to actually design in concurrency in a way that makes sense rules. read/write locks as builtins, actually being able to control access to stuff so concepts that are forbidden in python like shared memory between real threads are possible. going to remember this for the future, the cost of learning a new language is not greater than the things it lets you do, if the fit is right. entering my actual polyglot era

OK with a bit more reading I am convinced that stockfish simulates the correct series of possible moves for a DVD piece and thus should be on equal footing for strategic use by the algo. At first I was thinking there was no benefit to spawning a DVD, but it does have one powerful advantage, and that is doubling your moves. So if you were able to time the spawn and coordinate it with your other moves, it could be a powerful piece even without being under your direct control. You do actually have a decent bit of control over it at spawn because it can only be changed every so often, and only if its your color when it hits an edge, and it is costly to do. I did it lazily so the direction it goes after promotion is "towards the center" but I can fix that. I am going to simulate a bunch of games and see if the CPU ever chooses to spawn DVD over a queen. I doubt it will, but it might do so in some very specific conditions and I want to see what those are.

In line with chess NPCs, maybe you should be able to bribe DVD to go another way by giving it some of the pieces you captured. This saves your piece from being captured, and maybe reroutes it to capture your opponents piece, at the expense of spawning more DVDs. The characterization of DVD is a sort of borg-like, allegianceless horde who is only concerned with creating more DVDs

shout out to stockfish which made it extremely easy to implement a custom dvd chess piece and then put the engine in wasm. i thought that would be about 10x as hard as it was, but since the fairy stockfish already had a bunch of variants with different hacks in there i could just diff fairy stockfish from regular and see where the different kinds of hacks live.
