this is true for so much beyond chatbot use. a functioning, responsive, humane medical system with time to actually listen to people wouldn't stop everyone i know from obsessing about weird diets and cleanses and seeking out raw milk and avoiding vaccines and all of the usual litany of actually-harmful woo, but it sure would reduce the incidence.

This year Trump has accepted only white refugees. Yes—6,665 out of 6,668 refugees admitted are white South Afrikaaners. The other 3 are from Afghanistan. Despite Afghan refugees following all the rules, getting fully vetted, & risking their lives to help US soldiers against Taliban—Trump rejected all but 3.
It was never about law & order. It was always about white supremacy.

It's nice that we now have a new "doom weather pattern" to match current social conditions
The last few seasons of this show have been kinda brutal. But it's nice that the set designers have taken the care to make sure the set design matches the script
Nobody would be reaching for ChatGPT after talking to their doctor if their care was already going great and they felt listened to and cared for. People are routinely dismissed, ignored, condescended to and ultimately discarded by our medical system (and I'm not just talking about the US here).
I do think that the *thesis* holds up, but the corollary here is that AI doesn't just _make_ adversarial communications, its endemic use _reveals_ adversarial communication.
RE: https://mastodon.social/@grimalkina/116924843974251266
One place I think my "adversarial communication" post fell down a little bit was by characterizing the health-care use-case as a bit too hypothetical and generic. Real people are using LLMs right now to navigate the (broken) health care system, in a situation where they really have no other options.

A thread.
We cannot just say “AI is wrong” but ask why it is appealing? How is it solving a real/perceived problem, and what are we proposing as an alternative? A legitimate alternative.
AI is appealing here, at least partially, because our health care system is fundamentally broken and unsupportive of individuals. Many doctors would like to be more involved but effectively are punished financially if they do much as try.
And I’ve also had plenty of medical individuals who exhibit near zero level of empathy. Like the pediatric surgeon who didn’t understand why I cared about service industry workers.
You cannot just say “no” but have to engage, understand, and help create alternatives.
I don’t have answers here.
And I see patients using AI to better understand their condition as failure of a system. A doctor using an LLM to do their job, say, diagnose, is a failure of the individual.
