My partner just tried putting her CV through some ATS checkers that use LLMs. Her name can be turned into a male name by deleting one letter. Doing so caused her score to jump 10 points.

Anyone using these tools for hiring is going to have some massive discrimination lawsuits in their future.

Update on this one: I felt a little as though I'd been neglecting the engineering fundamentals work relative to the statistics work on here. Happily, this has now been rectified: there is a very solid note about how memory works in computing systems now, along with some basic learning resources about pointers.

Extremely useful to know, even if you're not intending to use pointers personally.

well think about why they help in erlang - "let it crash". and why does that help in erlang? because they get restarted, which resets their state.

we don't need that in systems programming because we can just catch errors locally and correct them. and when you take all of the linkage out, it really does simplify the model greatly.

we're still doing the rest of the erlang model though, just implemented somewhat differently.

Several of us grabbed out water containers in case they were needed and ran over, but it was already extinguished.

Ten seconds later the fire service arrived at speed. They weren't needed this time, but grateful that they exist!
