My favorite test for whether I'm listening to an urbanist or just a car hater: mentally substitute "cars" with "people" and see if the phrase still make sense.
"Your city is full of space that could be used for parks or houses but is instead used for people" — what a horrible place, indeed!
This is just one of those topics where nuance is absolutely everything. Implying that houses and parks are used by people, but that cars are just objects by themselves is not nuanced.

speaking of open source promotion did you know that I maintain a basically feature-complete library for binding a global hotkey to a background Python process on your mac https://github.com/glyph/QuickMacHotKey ?
okay I've gotten like 5 cold outreach emails — they're not _quite_ spam, but definitely spam-adjacent — in the last 2 weeks offering to help me market my open source projects. I actually _would_ like help doing this! but the first one I interacted with copped to using LLMs immediately, and I suspect that's what the rest are doing too.
why is this suddenly a business? I am in an _extremely_ niche market, the "vanity press wannabe" of the open source world. why are these cropping up *now*?
A one day task turned into a two day task because I'm not buying $7 SD cards for $45, out of principle.

One of the tipoffs that make it extremely easy for me to brush aside the current brigade of people who insist that I CW all my posts is that they overwhelming lead with over-the-top personal attacks.
Not a single one has said "here's a post of yours that caused me distress because it lacked a warning; please consider adding them on posts like this". Instead, it's that my "bad attitude" proves that I'm a complete monster.

If you're a member of the Rails core team, the best time to do something was yesterday. The next best time is now.
You have to live with yourself for the rest of your life based on what you do.

I noticed something I want to call a new etiquette rule which didn't exist pre-cheap flight and pre-Internet: discuss time with someone in a different time zone in their local time zone.
Not talking about efficiency or how error-prone it is, just noticing this is what tends to happen in a polite conversation.
Did you notice that as well, or is it just me?

the fact that there were enough lands to be viable but just kind of jammed into random clumps in an otherwise *mostly* unsorted run of cards is going to haunt me though
made a couple of very haphazard single-color creature-only decks just to give a feel for the rules, and I think we have a new screenless family activity
update: there are enough lands to make some decks. still a weirdly small proportion given all the other cards in here, but still, enough that I can do whatever color I want. whew.
