I’m pondering a policy change for social.lol/omg.lol, but I’d really like your input on it.

We don’t currently have any rules surrounding sharing AI or generative content here. (We have very little of that content being shared, but there’s some.)

I don’t think outright forbidding it is the right approach. What one person might view as “slop” might be regarded by someone else as the assistive output from an accessibility tool. The lines can be blurry and the use cases aren’t always black and white.

What I’d like to explore is a policy around honest disclosure of generative AI outputs. Forget about whether it’s good or bad or right or wrong — those debates will continue regardless (as they should). But separate from any moral or ethical considerations, the question is: would it be reasonable to ask anyone who shares generative AI outputs to clearly label them as such?

Using a consistent hashtag would take care of disclosure, and would also make it easy for folks to hide that content if they don’t want to see it.

What do you think?

Here's a couple thought experiments:

Would you allow an AI company to make a model trained off your open source licensed work, if the model was guaranteed to be open weights under an MIT-like license, and the training dataset was public?

And

Do you think that the existing licenses of open source work allow this already? (answers may vary by license)

Here are the #Strudel starter cards, as mentioned up thread:

I'm particularly interested in feedback on content. Straightforward, clear, allowing enough space to play, the best examples of code snippets to inspire, etc.?

I'm not going to go source control + contributions just now, please just drop me a public or private message here if you have thoughts, ta!

(Incidentally, I wish there were Free Software / Free Culture licenses that had these kinds of exclusions, there's been a push to make the licenses usage-agnostic but in le Era Of AI we can see how many shortcomings it has. Of course, everyone has a different definition of "things I don't want this used for" and there's bound to be grey areas in what's acceptable and unacceptable use, but there must be some sort of wranglable legalese that points towards the idea of You Can Use My Stuff As Long As It Isn't Fed Into The Slop Machine Or Used To Hurt People)

I'm going to be fiddling with this for a while, I can already sense it.

It sounds like video game boss music and I don't even have a video game with a boss.

So the obvious thing is to develop a whole video game with a dramatic boss just so I have a reason to make this track

It's a growing opt-in directory of software developers who write code by hand. When you hear someone tell you “nobody does that” you can point to this and say “well these folks do.”

If you're #ProCraft and care about the future of handcrafted software, please add yourself to the list! I'd love to see this grow to 100s of signatories (I know y'all are out there!) and really send a message.

A page style layout with the following: We write code by hand. We use Natural Intelligence to build software libraries and applications in production today. Some of them you may be using right now. There are people who say "nobody authors code by hand any longer." We are here to say that's incorrect. Because we do it. All the time. If you write code by hand, add your name to this list!

Interestingly with both Strudel and Godot, I use the engines, struggle for a bit, put them down for a few months, then put them back up and start being able to do the things I used to struggle with.

And then I'm like "how the hell did my brain do that??"

Haven't done this for a while and wow #Strudel has a lot of settings to poke around with even when you're Not A Musician

(Like I love the transpose feature and the "use numbers to represent a scale" feature, saves a lot of the need for music theory)
