New from 404 Media: Wikimedia will not voluntarily recognize union a supermajority of its workers want

Wikimedia waited until the days following its largest worldwide conference to issue a statement saying it would not voluntarily recognize a union of its workers.

Wedge modeled and printed. Hopefully it’s the right size, I just eyeballed the diameter and shape of the pipe mount adapter. I’m going to wait until the heat index is under 100 before trying it out (maybe tomorrow morning).

My 81-year-old mom, who's a widow and has no current photo ID was rejected today when we tried to get her a photo ID card. She's been living in Alberta since 1978 and has no current passport.

She had her birth certificate but because she changed her last name when she got married in 1964, they could not issue her an ID card without her marriage certificate.

We did not know where she may have stashed her marriage certificate since she moved into a senior's residence three years ago and had to downsize a lot of her things.

These new rules are going to disenfranchise a lot of people hoping to vote in the referendum. We need to get the word out. If you are contacting another province for birth or marriage certificates, that will take time.

Luckily for my mom, after searching through an old trunk with multiple albums and brown envelopes, we found the original marriage certificate. We'll be back at the registry in a couple of weeks to try and get that ID card.

This UCP government is pure evil.

All free software maintainers will be randomly assigned a local user. You must go to their house and watch them install your rust crate, python wheel, flatpak and you must watch them use it all the way through.

If they like it you will be given a cup of tea.

Library maintainers will be assigned a nearby junior developer and script writers will be assigned a fresh faced junior admin.

I don't make the rules, this is just the law now.

Most clients have a “remind me to add Alt Text” setting. Turning it on helps.

Don’t think I can get any closer to the desired azimuth, but I might need to model a 6 degree wedge real quick to tweak the elevation.

Debug data for Starlink dish orientation showing azimuth is correct to 2/1000 of a degree, but elevation is off by about 6 degrees.

This one really touched a nerve, I’ve had a number of emails from real maintainers today sharing their stories that end up being way too similar 🥲

Each arm is labeled with the following text: - Blind and vision-impaired people - People with temporarily impaired vision - People with slow internet connection - People wondering WTF they're looking at The words "alt text" are shown in the center where all four hands meet.

Does it bother anyone else, that when you switch around your audio devices that PulseAudio's default audio device doesn't stay in sync with your choice of OSS's default on #FreeBSD ? Anyone have any clever tricks for fixing that?

Im partway through writing a little utility that sits in the system tray and keeps them in sync, and Im wondering if it would be useful to anyone else? OR perhaps im duplicating effort I don't know about?

This is new since I last looked at their offerings:

I haven't used it or even seen reviews, but I imagine they'll put similar routing software inside of it, so that might be an option worth investigating as well.

For #Codeberg members: In the wake of finding my software in The Stack I'm going to raise the issue of requiring FLOSS licenses when FLOSS licenses grant access to any use-case, when I (and I suspect other devs) want to be able to use licenses that forbid AI training.

The discussion is at https://codeberg.org/Codeberg-e.V./Discussion/issues/195, I don't think it's available to non-members. I want to turn it into a formal proposal and don't quite know how. I would appreciate help in this area.
