We don't need "AI". The very narrative is an insult to everyone who's been (for example) trying to actually improve things, and has run up against a wall of climate denial, greed and so on, not lack of "intelligence".

Real talent is being thrown away every day to please "AI" investors who do the exact opposite of solving our problems.

how do people feel about having an explicit box type at all? if we had one, it would probably be called heap and the compiler would manage it mostly transparently.

you'd instantly get the ability to combine multiple structs into a larger struct and save on memory indirection

and it would leave lots of room for me to try and support more low level stuff. that stuff would probably feel less bolted on.

My mom has been running a community art & poetry project using the fence around her home for the last 15+ years, which she calls The Poetry Fence. She takes it very seriously and uses it as a base for all sorts of poetry outreach in her neighborhood. She's recently written a book about her experience with this project which she's trying to get published by a small press.

And in her mid-70s, she's just created her first ever website. It'd mean a lot to her if you take a look! https://www.poetryfencecommunity.com/

She doesn't know I'm posting this, but if she did she'd probably want me to add that science is real, no person is illegal, trans rights are human rights, and banned books are worth reading. And most of all, that poetry is for everyone.

Boosts on her behalf appreciated.

What's up on the #smolweb? July 2026 roundup

New blog post !

July 2026 was a quietly busy month on the smolweb. The #Geminispace keeps growing toward 3,500 active capsules. A Gemini browser landed on a handheld game console. The Old Computer Challenge brought the #permacomputing and #smolnet communities together. Protocol design debates (SMTP vs #Gemini extensibility, TOFU improvements) show the community is still thinking critically about its own foundations. And the #gopher scene, far from dead, continues to produce practical content and welcome new operators...
