The big thing that I had been missing is the function row, a feature which some apps that I'm using (Xcode, Eclipse, arguably Emacs, Minecraft, World of Warcraft) almost _require_ you to have in hardware (at various times, requiring you to use an F-key like a modifier, and hold it down while pressing something else). I was wiling to pay heftily to remediate *only* that flaw.

Okay so my point of comparison is that I have been typing on my Cepstrum, previously the only comparable device that I'm aware of, for the last 3 years. And I have loved it. Arms shoulder width apart, it's saved me from massive amounts of back & shoulder pain, so, very much worth it, but, obviously I wanted an upgrade.

Also I loved it. See this is how you make a dumb episode. Stuff it with fun and be silly.

Also Anson Mount can make any kind of silly good.

Anchorage Daily News | Getty Images NOW THIS IMPACT Mary Peltola Democratic Senate Candidate Tech billionaire Elon Musk has given $1.5 million to a group backing a November ballot measure to repeal Alaska's ranked-choice voting system and open primaries. The system helped Democrat Mary Peltola win Alaska's 2022 special election for Congress despite the state's Republican-leaning electorate. Peltola is now running for Senate in a highly contested race against Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan, making the voting system a major target for conservatives seeking to repeal it.
chorage Daily N Getty Images NOW THIS IMPACT Musk's money went to the Wisconsin-based Aurora Action Network, which then gave $1 million to the repeal campaign. The measure would restore closed partisan primaries and pick-one general elections while eliminating campaign finance rules that reveal large donations. The repeal effort has also attracted other billionaire megadonors looking to keep big money flowing through our political system.

@dansup@mastodon.social says it's completely opt-outable via the app settings, if you don't want that kind of tracking. Additionally, the metrics gathered only affect your own For You feed, and it does not feed into the global algorithm.

Lenovo turned out to be not the only choice. In fact, the only configuration I managed to find that met my needs was ~$1500 more expensive than a comparable ASUS. So I went with that one. (Thanks to @namuro for suggesting, I haven't looked at ASUS in ages.)

Also looked at Framework, but got scared by the ongoing drama around the company (too lazy to research details). Oh, and their Apple-inspired keyboard is the suck-iest I've seen.

I absolutely endorse this sentiment but I would be remiss if I did not observe that solidarity is, in addition to a general attitude, also a bunch of excruciatingly tedious *work*.

You’ve gotta give up on your own priorities to make someone else’s more important. You’ve gotta figure out WHICH person you are going to do that for. You’ve gotta reach out, they’ve gotta respond, you’ve gotta hammer out a revshare agreement, you have to schedule a biweekly call to sync up on deliverables.

Experimental feature for Visible Zorker: search bar in the source pane.

You can search for the names of routines, objects, globals, and constants, as well as the contents of printable string. It's not a full-text search (it only finds where things are declared, not used) but still handy for poking around.

Let me know how it works. Once it's solid I'll deploy it for all the other games.

Part of the ZIL source code for Zork 1. A search box in the top right displays search results for “axe”: the AXE object, the AXE-F routine, and a bunch of game messages that mention the troll’s bloody axe.

This is why a truly critical AI literacy must peel back the layers of human sense-making and investigate its interactional foundations. When we do so, we must walk a fine line. We must be prepared to deal with disenchantment without falling into the trap that casts all magic as naïve or obsolete. There always will be a place for enchantment and mystery. Divination and other generative uses of chance have served us as technologies of decisionmaking and sources of entertainment from timeeimmemorial. But magic appropriated by extractive capitalism and administered as the final technosolution is a different beast altogether. As Dami en Williams has noted, “the present magic of “AI” is performed on us without our input, without our knowledge, and without our consent. There’s another word for that kind of magic; binding, subjugating magic performed on you against your will is called a curse.” (Williams 2023:108). One of the goals of critical AI literacies is to give people the tools to lift that curse.
