The big thing that I had been missing is the function row, a feature which some apps that I'm using (Xcode, Eclipse, arguably Emacs, Minecraft, World of Warcraft) almost _require_ you to have in hardware (at various times, requiring you to use an F-key like a modifier, and hold it down while pressing something else). I was wiling to pay heftily to remediate *only* that flaw.
