fun additional bug: Mail will also incorrectly display the recipient as the original sender rather than the forwarder as it should, but the profile picture will be of the original sender

today's bug preventing me from completing basic administrative tasks without doing backflips and wasting hours:

1. someone receives a message from iCloud Hide My Email
2. they forward it to you.
3. you receive it in Apple Mail, with the banner "This message was forwarded to you by Hide My Email" presumably because of the still-intact X-Icloud-Hme
4. you forward it elsewhere, carefully selecting the correct outbound address
5. Apple Mail ignores that address and just forwards it via iCloud

@glyph @wronglang Yeah, at that point you're very much guessing which way the cops are most likely to fuck with you and protect against that.

And it's not just the cops! At the most dangerous protest I went to, the most dangerous party were the fascists not the cops (but admittedly, the cops really did not help....).

@glyph @wronglang The one I struggle with is passkeys; I understand what the purpose is in theory, but in practice, between "the pop ups are annoying" and "don't forget to add account lock-out due to lost devices to the threat model", I haven't felt them easy to adopt

The obvious corollary is that privatisation shrinks provision and creates pervasive inequality of access. That is, firms marketing privacy by telling you they think it's "a human right" (which you can access by purchasing their product) are cynically *reducing* net privacy.

Working on an already too long pice about the unbridled cynicism of Big Tech re: privacy (very much including Apple), but the (unoriginal) core idea fits on a postcard:

Privacy is a public good. Anyone trying to sell it to you is looking to privatize gains and socialise losses.

It's not adulthood, I fear. It's capitalism that's inherently lonely. Our economic system takes an overworked, isolated population to thrive.

I'd imagine adulthood would be pretty dope if we had a community-based society instead of rugged individualism.

Neqina Wright @IAmNeqina Adulthood is low key lonely af. Everyone's busy. Everyone sucks at texting. We all just work all day to come home and sleep to wake up and work again. On weekends you catch up on things you couldn't do during the week. It's all spid lol.

like from all these allusions I gather that _something_ happened in El Paso or some other border community that made a bunch of people mad and motivated even the latino population to shift right a bunch but:

A) I still literally don't know what it was despite being informed to an unhealthy level, and
B) it really seems like a lot of the electoral consequences of this landed in places like Idaho and Montana which does call into question its material immediacy

was it just noise-machine bullshit?

How might things have been different if so many of us weren't convinced that devaluing our own labor was essential to our careers, let alone betraying labor solidarity!

AI is only possible, I'll posit, because so fucking many of us never saw ourselves as laborers in the first place, and actively resisted any kind of identification with labor (to wit, "uber but for" is antagonistic towards labor, not a cutesy way of marketing an app).

Remember: the term "AAA game" or "Triple-A game" came from investors, as A, Double-A, Triple-A etc is used to describe how 'safe' an investment is

It doesn't say anything about the quality of the game at all, and was coined by people which don't care about that, just about money.

there are a lot of actually extremely well-meaning people working on these technologies, I know some of them personally, I have plenty of anecdotal evidence that what is going on is not _just_ a corporate land-grab at the expense of users. but _some_ of it is a corporate land-grab. and if we had independent, popular infosec public intellectuals who were not beholden to these interests, it would be possible for the public to disentangle these two truths and get to the nuances involved.

Mastodon Feed

glyph ("Glyph") wrote:

to put a finer point on it: the underlying problem is that the authority in the "infosec community", such as it is, comes _exclusively_ from a few megacorps with an overtly monopolistic level of control over different user populations. These corporations are under no obligation to explain themselves, so they just… don't. There's no public record of why they are doing what they're doing, and they either strictly mandate certain practices (codesigning, TLS) or aggressively promote them (passkeys)

Graphite sketch of a raven mid call, beak open, feathers rendered in fine detailed strokes with dramatic tonal contrast. The bird stands on a branch, one leg lifted, set against a mostly blank cream page. A mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, and coffee cup rest beside the sketchbook on a wooden table.

but the rollouts are almost all done in a way which looks like "well, we tried to ask you to turn this on, and nobody did, so, time to opt you all in without your knowledge or consent. don't worry it's easy and fun!"

I have zero evidence to prove this but it feels to me like the pitch of this skepticism has gone up as this tone is also adopted by AI companies rolling out obvious bullshit, making everyone feel like maybe security tech has also always been obvious bullshit

Mastodon Feed

glyph ("Glyph") wrote:

I have some sympathy to the folks doing these rollouts because to some extent, the necessity *is* just too complex to explain to the mass market who needs to adopt them. I am not saying that we should be giving lectures on Bleichenbacker attacks and PQ cipher suites at the local library, but there needs to be like a public, standard reference threat model that we can refer to so people understand what *their* part is

to be very clear: *no shade* to anyone expressing such skepticism, the problem is not that people are saying dumb things, it's that infosec in general has done a very bad job of communicating the problems that these technologies address and why the tradeoffs have been made. the downsides are obvious to everyone because we're smacking into them every day, the necessity is obscure and complex. so much advocacy is done with such condescension and "don't worry about it, it's easy!" dismissiveness
