there are a lot of actually extremely well-meaning people working on these technologies, I know some of them personally, I have plenty of anecdotal evidence that what is going on is not _just_ a corporate land-grab at the expense of users. but _some_ of it is a corporate land-grab. and if we had independent, popular infosec public intellectuals who were not beholden to these interests, it would be possible for the public to disentangle these two truths and get to the nuances involved.
