Mind you, I had a hearty laugh yesterday when our website was (and you will find this quite humorous yourself, I think) hacked and there was absolutely NOTHING I could do to help even slightly. Spent the whole day chuckling quietly.

When you post on X, you are directly supporting the man who:

- Fired 80% of Twitter's workforce
- Dismantled Twitter's trust-and-safety infrastructure
- Turned the blue check into a for-profit impersonation circus
- Reinstated previously banned extremists, serial harassers, and spreaders of misinformation
- Suspended journalists for reporting on his jet
- Amplified misinformation repeatedly, especially 2024 election misinformation
- Endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory
- Told advertisers who objected to hate speech to “go fuck yourself.”
- Sued CCDH, Media Matters and other critics/researchers after they reported on the rise in hate speech on X
- Used X as part of a strategy to provide major political support of Trump
- Architected DOGE's mass federal layoffs
- Gained personal access to sensitive federal employee information
- Dismantled USAID
- Fired thousands of government employees in error
- Encouraged the creation of sexualized deepfakes with Grok
- Laughed at people expressing concern for his Gigafactory's water consumption, despite global record low water levels

When you "return to X", you're supporting Elon Musk, full stop. There's no way around it. When you post there, you're contributing to him. Directly.

So if you're not going into this with your eyes open, you're fooling yourself. But if you *are* going into it with your eyes open, you are the problem.

I hate to shit on the work of people giving stuff away for free, but, this sucks. I am exhausted by every product I use being infested by this aesthetics-only design, design that is purely about how it looks and not how it works, even the open source ones, even the ones I support with donations or patronage. I agree with all of mcc’s critique but I don’t know how and don’t have the energy to channel this somewhere useful. maybe the thing that gets me to pick another instance will be this UI.

I hate when interfaces that previously had nice, clear lines, *literal lines*, between interface elements of different semantic type, get redesigned to instead have vague, fuzzy, screen-eating¹ whitespace dividers. I have hated this since 2009. I stopped using the iPhone because it adopted this philosophy. I feel it massively increases cognitive load because instead of functional areas the screen is just various floating text

I hate this in gmail, I hate it in every app that has it. I like how in current Mastodon Advanced I can work on a post on the left side while looking at something else on the right side

Ah! Also I hate this. I recognize why private messages within a thread can be confusing, but I really like how private messages on Mastodon are "hallway track" side discussions from regular threads instead of there being a shitty IM app crammed into every social network which everyone just uses to set up IM conversations on better IM apps. It's very good that Mastodon DMs are *pinned to discussions*, and odd that Mastodon is killing virtually the only feature distinguishment they have with bsky.

Describing how DMs are now a separate tab within Mastodon, like they are on Twitter or Bluesky, and not something integrated with your timeline.

Jokes!

Seriously, though, if the reason you left a platform is that it actively devalued people, profited from hate speech and fundamentally rejected the concept of inherent dignity, and that platform has continued to double down on this position - you have no business returning.

Unless you’ve walked back your principles, decided not to be part of the solution and instead profit from being part of the problem.

Thank you, @neatnik, for holding the line and continuing to create and curate a space where human rights are centred*.

Also I was so broke I couldn't afford to paint someone else's walls only to paint them back white later. And why bother when you know you'll have to undo everything to make the space bland again some time in the future?

A reminder that I stopped paying money to host my blog with Manton when his racist transphobe contractor was exposed and Manton didn’t think there was anything wrong with just sweeping that under the rug and keeping him on the books.

As a paying customer told him I was outraged.

He asked “How would you have liked me to have dealt with this differently” (I think he thought he had some point and was being clever with this, or maybe he was just genuinely utterly ignorant. I’ve no idea.)

When I detailed a plan where I would have cut him loose, apologise, donate to a suitable charity and forcefully project my community values and what you want to stand for moving forwards…. He just ignored me and continued to chat to the people who agreed with him instead. Easier innit?

I cancelled my account and never looked back.

Do not listen to this man about anything to do with web communities or values.

He is a bad actor for both.
