@mastodonmigration The title of that movie “Sleeping with the Enemy” comes to mind. I can’t think of an example of anything good for The People would result from cutting deals with Nazis. Especially Kushner, the guy who stole PPE and ventilators from NY and the Tri-State area, leaving thousands of New Yorkers to die. So many that they had refrigeration trucks in the streets to hold all the dead bodies. Easy to see who Jeffries gives a fuck about. I’ve supported him but this is unforgivable

Okay, it basically works!

One very annoying coda to this, though, is that the "allow internet access" toggle on a VLAN in Unifi apparently *also* means "allow access from the secret, hidden VLAN created by VPN client configurations" too. For this particular use-case it's fine (all these machines already have internet access) but I'd be pretty annoyed if I wanted proper perimeter security around an internal service

meme. KEEP DOING IMPEDANCE CONTROL EVERYTHING IS A TRANSMISSION LINE. YEARS OF DIE SHRINKS and now NOTHING is lumped length. Want to go fast? Please transmit my files over the air using 60GHz radio waves.” - Statements we could only dream of a decade ago. LOOK at what Electronics Engineers have been achieving with little more than some copper foil glued to fiberglass and a fancy calculator. Images with exclamation marks under them. Left shows tabbed routing for controlled impedance. Middle shows an 800G QSFP-DD DR8+ network module, and the equations for Hammerstand and Cannonball-Huray foil roughness loss modelling. Right shows PAM4 and DB-PAM4 eye diagrams at 90, 96, and 100Gbps. They have harnessed the power of sand and metal to scream through the ether.

So I read a post about the future of front-end development, and it was mostly about "modern" ways to write framework code, css, etc. Who is out there figuring out the future of building useful code that actually solves people's problems? We don't need more efficient ways to write code, we need to understand what code needs to be written.

So, please enjoy my janktastic solution:

- I will provision an internal VLAN with dedicated static ranges for both IPv4 and IPv6.
- For each (computer, dock) tuple, I will provision a static IP, and configure a virtual interface with those static IPs
- I will then put in a DNS record for each of those static IPs for the same hostname
- Happy Eyeballs figures out which one is currently connected, and voila, I can connect to whichever device wherever I am

The internal API docs that it sends you to are totally wrong and claim that it only supports individual IPv4 records in the API, but today I found the _actual_ API docs which show all the different record types that I'd experimentally figured out I can add https://developer.ui.com/network/v10.4.57/creatednspolicy

In 2025 they added a more or less full-featured internal DNS service with an API and everything. But, of course, it's Unifi, so a DNS record is a type of "policy". Like you know how a CNAME is basically the same thing as a firewall rule? Like that.

but this problem is, as all technical problems are, ultimately about *DNS*. While it is *annoying* that the Unifi UI thinks that an ethernet hardware address "has a hostname", the fundamental issue is really just about being able to create DNS records. so, uh, can I create DNS records?

Turns out: yes!

A lot of my Unifi network knowledge is out of date because I _exhaustively_ learned about its featureset in 2020, when I first got all this stuff, but they've been quietly upgrading all the time.

*naïve* static IPs create 3 problems: first, if I do this and then forget about it for a year, then move one of these adapters to a different network, it will mysteriously just not work at all and require debugging. I really don't want to be bothered with that. second, it basically breaks IPv6 completely. third, there are weird issues with moving devices and confusing the arp cache if you send any traffic within 2XMSL which is just a big bummer of a bug magnet.

okay I think I figured out a solution for myself, so, INFODUMP TIME!

FIrst, some non-solutions:

mDNS won't work for two reasons: A, you can't get a TLS certificate for an mDNS name, and B, mDNS doesn't propagate over *any* VPN (OpenVPN, WireGuard, L2TP), and the whole point is that I want to run services that can be accessible to clients from wherever, including on the VPN
