It took me a long time to learn confidence. In myself, as a technologist, in my technical judgement. As a self-taught late starter, without much formal structure. Easier to skim past things you don't need to understand and just hack away until it starts working.
You don't get much feedback. People seem surprised you're doing it at all. My early career was pure skills acquisition through rage at mens' disdain.
It takes you a long time to realise that a lot of what you see is mediocre. That the men talking you down are in fact a bit scared, their status depends on things staying mediocre. Not the very good ones, you learn to tell that they see and treat you differently.
But you can't trust your own judgement. Self-assessment of your own competence doesn't match how you're received, how you're heard, how you're seen. Creates an internal tension. To believe that you're any good is just inviting delusion

There is a history here that demonstrates we not only can, but MUST win. Or teach your kids to goosestep. Because they'll live in the shadow of your shame.

there are many ways to put dependent types on SQL queries. the part i've been most interested in recently is type-safe joins and the extra table that pops into scope when you do one.
well i think i've done that bit.
fromexpressions are indexed by a scope of tables which have been mentioned, if you join, you provide a proof that the columns on both table you're joining to are the same type.i've made a few different choices on this one. most notably, tables are not a normal record type, they're extensible record descriptors. this gives me the flexibility to e.g. synthesise a record for only some of the columns in a table, such as if you select a handful of named columns to reduce the returned data size.
i think you can see the general direction i'm aiming for. i don't know how much of it will end up being practical yet. one thing i think would be very difficult is making sure you can't generate invalid sql. the common cases are easy of course, but once you've started joining, there are aggregation rules you must satisfy for the query to be valid. enforcing those will be hard.

A word of advice people, that comes from experience.
When you're feeling down because all the good people are dying, make stuff. I mean it. It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't have to be useful (tbh its best if its daft). It'll keep your hands busy and often it'll distract your brain too.
And at the end of it, you've made a thing. And maybe you'll feel less sad, maybe you won't, but I always find the world feels less awful when I've been making random stuff for the sake of it.

Today I wrote my 1000th blog post. It is about the flattening of metadata ontologies in a repository context. This can, though, be of strategic value to radical publishing projects.
I then developed, as part of my need to get to grips with our KC Works import API, an automatic importer for these blog posts. The API works fantastically, mostly thanks to Ian Scott and his also-great documentation The PDF is also auto-generated.

I haven't worked on its codebase in a while but I keep wanting to add similar features to `sned` (or something like it) with the lessons I've learned. It would be:
* text-based
* offline/local-first. (sync, then read)
* have sULIDs
* etc. :)
