Let's actually talk about the "AI destroying the world" thing. One specific apocalypse scenario is the "paperclip maximizer" problem. The scenario goes that a super intelligence is tasked with maximizing the number of paperclips produced by a company. Because of a thing called "instrumental convergence," the AI kills all humans to prevent them from shutting it down, then it destroys everything else strip mining the Earth, etc.
Basically, the intelligence doesn't understand the actual goal of helping people hold paper together and therefore calculates intermediate goals that violate the *implicit* goal in order to fulfill the *explicit* goal.
The thing is, that's just capitalism. The whole AI scam is an example of this, where maximization of quarterly profit is an explicit goal and "destroying human civilization and most life on Earth through climate change" is a side effect of the "build as many datacenters as possible" subgoal.
Capitalism has been an apocalypse manifesting malicious intelligence since we figured out that burning fossil fuels changes the climate, back in 1824.
But in following the AfD victory recently, hearing people describing the small "kingmaker" BSW where a far-"left" splinter group that might anoint the AfD with a ruling majority, whose platform is populism, nationalism, and xenophobia, combining authoritarian centralized economic policy with nativism… like a sort of *national* socialism, one might say… I feel like we're about to repeat a *lot* of mistakes from the mid-20th century, potentially very quickly
My normal feeling on this sort of discourse is that this is like complaining about getting water stains on the hardwood floors while the house is burning down, we need a BIG swing to the left and it's probably going to take a generation to get as far as we need to go, we do not need anybody pushing in a progressive direction to "moderate" even a tiny bit right now
This is where my executive function is these days, I guess, unable to even follow the instructions on the "DEAD DISCOURSE, *DO NOT EAT*" bag in the fridge full of 90-year-old ML/Anarchist debates.

We don't know for sure yet whether the AI business model will lead to consciousness, but we know for a fact that it creates insanity.
Capitalism is one possible machine for achieving this perverse outcome, but authoritarian planned economies can do it faster and with fewer opportunities for interruption. The problem is authoritarian control and the problem with western political discourse is that everybody worried about “communism” (which they understand to be “unchecked secular authoritarian autocracy”) cannot understand that the predictable concentration of power that capitalism creates is the same thing with extra steps
RE: https://kolektiva.social/@Hex/117257581151346827
I agree with this take and I mostly agree with hex’s politics, but this is becoming a pet peeve: “destructive optimization of meaningless metrics in service of pleasing an authority distant from material reality” is not “capitalism”. Read “Mao’s Great Famine” if you want to see someone build this exact machine for national and ideological pride rather than profit maximization.
Right now we need to move very far left but we must not delude ourselves that left politics are incorruptible.

Put simply, translators must not cede a single inch of ground to machine translation. #Translation is an art, not a merely utilitarian tool or necessary evil, and as such it is filled with choice and interpretation and subjectivity and craft and all the other things that make us human. AI-produced versions are not “translating” in any meaningful way so much as stealing and repackaging past human work, all while contributing to the false notion that objective translation is possible. What makes translation *interesting* is the human choice that has gone into it, and I do not want to spend one moment of my precious human life contemplating the “choices” an LLM has made . . .

Want to wager a guess at why it fails? Or should I just share the answer?

I've not been keeping up with publishing news so this ongoing collapse in non-fiction was news to me.

Sure, "AI" might kill us all, but it's rather more likely that the folks running "AI" companies are hyping up that fear in order to have their pet legislators introduce bills that advantage their positions while kneecapping their competitors and to give them a little more runway to figure out how to avoid the coming massive economic collapse they are still in the process of creating. The apocalypse is far more likely to be caused by the tech CEOs than their spicy autocorrect programs.

Tech fetishism, the ascription of human agentive powers to machinery, is always a political act. It obscures that the goals, the purposes, embodied in any technology are human purposes; more specifically, that they are the automated purposes of a minute subset of humanity, a class fraction, the twisted, ruthless, ketamined, indoctrinated, emotionally stunted moral nullities that rule Silicon Valley like child-kings, have made themselves the bearers of myriad impossible hopes, and have now bought their way into the Trump court. It says, that’s just how the technology works, it’s a capricious demigod which can either shower us with riches or have us all killed, we must appease it and ensnare it, we must fear it and cherish it, but what we mustn’t ever do is stop throwing money at it, or stop genuflecting to it, or begin to think: this is nothing but our own alienated collective power turned against us by cut-throat capitalists, and in making us the servants of their technology, they try to make us their slaves.
