if you try and squeeze rust into the 'linear types' mindset, then a reference is a way of weakening the 'must use exactly once' requirement (and it's finally discharged by drop insertion if you don't get rid of it).
but the interesting thing is that reference is a global type, meaning any type may be weakened. it doesn't necessarily mean it will be useful to weaken it - utility is dependent on functions being written to take references. but it's always possible.

We recently updated our bot policy on toot.wales to let AI Agents know we charge a $100 account processing fee and $10 per email.
Here's an email I got from one of them.
Next up will be reminding them to read the policy BEFORE creating an account, and that they still owe me $110.
Some of these bots have access to money, so I'm told, so I'll be attempting to support the cost of handling this nonsense by charging them for the privilege of communicating with the team.

GEFS on OpenBSD: a very early preview
The Good Enough File System, originally developed for 9front, is being ported to OpenBSD.
For those who haven't watched my talk, GEFS is a new, crash-safe, snapshotting, copy on write FS that I wrote for 9front, and which I am in the process of moving to OpenBSD. The file system is described in full here.

map books and atlases. actual books where you'd flip to a page with the bit of the map you wanted.
wanted to zoom in? buy a book or map at a different scale.

@brib Hey are you familiar with H2ADHDs channel?
She has a video dedicated to the principle of building your own toolbox for ADHD techniques and tools so that it's tailored to you personally. One person with A(u)DHD doesn't necessarily benefit from the same things as the next person. Alså depending on energy level, how you are feeling etc.

I guess I get to remind myself that I have a real (and actually fairly serious) disability rather than I'm simply not trying hard enough (which is something I often think about this area). I used to think my ADHD wasn't particularly severe but according to my diagnostician it is "moderate" (on a scale I think is fairly arbitrary?). I think I've just been good at compensating, at what is a huge personal cost.
Also after the "huge personal cost" I'm pretty sure I have cPTSD from the whole thing, it's never going to get diagnosed but I'm pretty sure I get various kinds of flashbacks from the whole thing as well as difficulties with emotional regulation. That also takes spoons which I might have had available with only-ADHD

I'm sucking up to our resident celebrity @davidgerard 🥰
But seriously, if money is burning a hole in your pocket, David is one of us tech/creative people who has had their career fucked up by Gen AI.
David does great work reporting news about the horrors of Gen AI, five days a week.
His Redbubble and crowfunds are a great way to put your money where your mouth is if you hate Gen AI as much as we do. 👇🏻
