A quick recap of what I'm currently working on: I'm building a subtractive monosynth on an STM32F446 microcontroller, with all code hand-written in assembly.

The goal is to build a synth expander that is inexpensive, independent from the computer and has enough physical controls to be suitable for live performance.

Part of the motivation for this project is that I didn't want to remain dependent on huge janky software stacks for doing music, especially now that things are quickly ensloppifying. Nor did I want to spend hundreds of euros on a hardware synth (and not learn a single thing about how they actually work in the process).

I've been working on this since May (with large study-related breaks in between) and it can now output a nice sawtooth signal over line out and react to MIDI Note On messages. Next up will be implementing envelope / NoteOff.

so i haven't actually come across a GC that gives a shit about alignment ,which i guess isn't that surprising, since malloc doesn't give a shit about alignment either. i of course wouldn't be happy unless we could do simd at native performance, so it's already been baked in. you kind of get it for free when you go size classes.

remember i was musing about meet in the middle layouts, where you could do 2 sizes? well i came up with a better option: 1 and 3 blocks. each size can store items of 1 or 3 times the base size. no, that doesn't include 2, that would be the next size class up.

because our metadata is reduced to a couple of bits (currently 2) per entry, we can afford to waste the space of 3 elements where only 1 item will go. we can always allocate a 3x anywhere except in the last 2 slots. we can allocate into a space that's being recycled (where some elements are already present in arbitrary slots) by keeping some watermarks and doing a little logic and then finding the next unset bit and its length.

a 1,3,5,7 block would be nice, except that beyond 2 sizes, you have to work harder to avoid leaving gaps, probably at performance cost.

as for how to get the first cut out, well i have to make many mundane decisions about block sizing. that's really most of it - picking my size classes and how many to allocate in a unit while ensuring i have a predictable-enough layout i can get away with just bitmasks for heap header info. not astonishingly interesting work, the fun bit is over.

okay well i think this is more or less the bulk of a useful first design. main things i'll want to add later are:

• generations (to bound traces), means we need to move to promote to next generation
• finalizers. not that i want to call them that because they're not available to the user, only to the compiler author. some working out to be done for these because i really don't want these to be a general purpose solution and something we have to pay for everywhere, they're really just there for things like filehandles that never got properly closed manually.
