as for how to get the first cut out, well i have to make many mundane decisions about block sizing. that's really most of it - picking my size classes and how many to allocate in a unit while ensuring i have a predictable-enough layout i can get away with just bitmasks for heap header info. not astonishingly interesting work, the fun bit is over.
