literally my *happy* thought for the day was that I paid >$6 for a gallon of gas for the first time today, at the cheapest station in town. and obviously I don’t enjoy paying that but if we can break $7 here (in california) then it seems likely that republicans will be out of power for 50 years and that might be enough time to actually heal something
I would describe my current level of motivation to do things as “catatonic”. could everything stop happening so much, please

@gnomon @cwebber For me, that a former Debian project leader pushes this, and that the Debian voting body voted for allowing use of LLMs, undermines my trust in the project and that it will keep its commitment to software freedom. Pushing for Debian developers to use a non-free system to do Debian work irks me. Even if it's just one developer doing this, it feels bad.

But this nonsense? I guess I'm old, but I can distinctly remember when being able to read the text of the code and understand for-real how the computer works and why it does what it does was, you know, THE ENTIRE FUCKING POINT OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE.
THAT WAS THE ENTIRE POINT OF THIS ENTIRE TEDIOUS EXERCISE. THAT WE SHOULD NOT BE AT THE MERCY OF CODE WE CAN'T UNDERSTAND.

The only interesting thing in these boxes looks more like an exercise in corporate psychoanalysis than anything you'd call engineering.
It's the list of a baked-in special cases that precision-target credulous tech journalists or tell the model it should escape responsibility or scrutiny from anyone looking for auditing or accountability.
What they included and why? That's sort of interesting, from a forensic-psychology perspective.
That this is all they bring to the table, though? Weak.

One of the psychologically damaging things early in the LLM hype cycle was this common refrain I heard from so many people around me: "I thought we cared about quality, here, but apparently if it's the bots, we'll cut any corner and eat any downtime and act like it's the future, and if I had caused any of these outages I would have been fired." It felt like a broken social contract, and I guess it was.
But I think that the bosses never cared that hard about quality. I think that was theater - partly for investor benefit, but mainly, for us. For retention, because recruiting is expensive and institutional knowledge is slow to rebuild. For reputation, because we talk. But also for satisfaction, because happy devs do better faster work and demand less. So, kayfabe culture.
LLMs offer an end to the ritual, they need no such appeasement. And you might think this is only for business. But fossbro, these tools put you in the manager role, and you will become a managerial thinker. You should ponder where that goes.

The part that is the most insulting, looking over this, is that there is not a single new idea, insight or engineering process in it. There never is. Every time there's an accidental code dump from a centibillion-dollar oligslopolist valley techcorp's newest bauble, announced by somebody cosplaying Steve Jobs and braying innovation innovation innovation, you crack it open and it's linux and some black-box model wrapped in cron jobs, shell scripts and reams of human text begging it to act right.
