More likely, this will never happen. Much like Y2K, some of us will toil in obscurity creating alternative strategies. A big chunk of the industry will be granted the de-facto (as Ed Zitron put it) "amnesty of 'who could have known?'". We will be building on the shifting sands of a potential plagiarism lawsuit for the next (thanks Disney) literal century

This situation is so extreme and so ridiculous (and so expensive on the part of the plaintiff) that it is unlikely to hit whole ecosystems. There will be a few projects that something like this happens to, and there will be heroic efforts to "save" them, presented as valorous collective action. And it will be. But if this happens, remember that the valorous collective sacrifice is being performed retroactively to allow for the shortcuts that maintainers are taking *now*.

All the lefties are now herded onto Bluesky and their output is constrained by a bunch of MAGA VCs and techbros. Great work team. 👏
Now imagine this happens to Linux. It's impossible to redeploy half-a-decade-old kernels without automated help for the security fixes. So, to "help out", Microsoft releases a version of Windows for the Cloud with an up-to-date WSL on it, so you can keep using your Linux software while you migrate to the "legally less risky" windows API.
Windows is still equally full of slop of course but nobody can prove it without public source and they have a legal team, so you could actually install it.

I have no problem with ICANN creating a billion gTLDs to "Make Money Fast". As a personal developer it's a win-win since you can finally find a name without using domain hacks. But the current policy is ridiculous, ICANN doesn't even pretend that it's not a money-grabbing "you can get any gTLD if you pay!" scheme: .accountant vs. .accountants, .auto vs. .autos, .build vs. .builders, .cam vs. .camera, .career vs. .careers, .contact vs. .contractors, .coupon vs. .coupons, .date vs. .dating, .deal vs. .deals, .dental vs. .dentist, .engineer vs. .engineering, .fan vs. .fans, .finance vs. .financial. The list of gTLDs that abuse the English language goes on and on.

Imagine the impact this would have on the community. Imagine trying to raise money required to re-litigate 5 years of work from a hundred contributors. Would Python continue to exist? Would we just have to immediately vaporize all progress made in the interim, start over at 3.14 and desperately fix 100 CVEs at once, carefully _not_ backporting all the fixes? Would every ecosystem package author need to join in to this all-hands-on-deck effort?
I'd like to ask CPython, today, to stop incorporating slop. This discussion would likely go nowhere. I cannot imagine a way to have it productively.
But there's a future (this *specific* one isn't likely) where, for example, NYT wins a devastating blow against Anthropic, something comes out in discovery about proprietary code as well as pirated books in the training set, somebody sues the PSF and then someone needs to review and potentially reauthor every commit from Python 3.14 to 3.19.

I do still (perhaps irrationally) believe that we can potentially redeem the community and rehabilitate everyone currently acquiescing to the slop bots but the thing that I'm struggling to adjust to is that I don't think I will be alive to see it, and some of the setbacks along the way are going to be just excruciatingly devastating.

the way I am coping with my own version of this, of creeping corruption all the way up and down the stack, rather than starting at the bottom of the stack with like-minded folks and building all of modern computing up from first principles, is to build whatever little islands of resilience that I can within the ocean of slop.
I don't know if this is for any principled reason though, it is probably just that I can't withstand the total ego-death of "abandon everything you've ever worked for"

Dear Lazyweb, please help me figure out why OBS keeps doing this crazy thing where sometimes audio goes into slo-mo dubstep glitch mode. Sometimes switching inputs fixes it. Sometimes only "sudo killall coreaudiod" fixes it. Here's what it sounds like. It seems to be doubling the spacing of the frames, and the buffer is infinite.
Even worse is that my check-volume.pl script fails to detect it much of the time. On this particular TS file it reports "glitchy: 27.4 ...
