I really thought the past few years were successful in teaching anti-racism but it turns out most people just learned how not to get yelled at on the internet. Because when it comes to Latinos, Americans are still very much in the dark ages.

When I say "we" have a lot of work to do, I really mean "YOU" have a lot of work to do.

The first thing you can do to deconstruct your anti-Latino upbringing is to recognize that you've been conditioned to believe that Latinos aren't capable of governing ourselves.

And that's why so many liberals feel comfortable with the knee jerk reaction of trying to educated us on our own oppression, or scolded us for things we're not in control of.

@glyph Text in that paper was starting to read fairly LLM generated, and indeed at least they admit it: "To help manage and cross-check the repository-scale evidence corpus, OpenAI Codex assisted with repository inspection, orchestration and checking of experiment scripts, evidence normalization, citation-metadata collection, drafting and revision of manuscript text and LATEX figures, and build and visual verification."

"Drafting and revision of manuscript text", yikes. They just had an agent write the paper for them.

I know rather a lot of trans and non-binary folks, mostly after becoming active in science fiction and fantasy fandom, which has a fair representation of both. Prior to knowing trans folks I was good with trans people as part of my general pro-LGBTQ+ stance, and after I knew them my understanding of their issues became more in depth. Trans rights are human rights, as we say, and should be whether you know any trans folks or not.

I just had a thought. Some people talk about #SelfHosting and #Homelabs as some prepper like thing for weird people. I want to change that, as it certainly doesn't reflect how I feel about my mailserver, my various web servers and other services I run myself.

And that's where the thought comes in. From now on I will call it:

#PersonalComputing instead (or again, depending on your age :)

Fun story: When I was traveling home I wore my "Watch Herzog" t-shirt for travel day. It's got a giant picture of Werner's face on it.

This fucked up every single facial recognition program both the Mexican and US passport control areas to the point that agents for both countries had to pull me aside and verify my identity the old fashioned way.

So t-shirts with big faces on them don't work well with AI Facial recognition systems. Figured that would be interesting information around here.

In some ways this is kind of a sad "doing the least" story much like my own. Sending a private email saying "gross, dude. it is fucked up that you said that, it really hurt some people. knock it off" should not have to be a profoundly brave thing that might cause you stress for half your life. But so it goes.

If more men would stand up and do this on a regular basis maybe it wouldn't have to be.

The rewards of true allyship are not accolades and attention but decades-long career-limiting simmering grudges from powerful assholes. Matthew Garrett is A Real One who has been holding it down for marginalized people in the tech industry for decades and rarely receives the credit for that.
