Hi!

I was laid off and am looking for remote work before my unemployment runs out. I am a US based software engineer(rust, angular, C#, python, etc) that doubles as a data scientist (chemical, computer vision, sensors, and normal data stuff). I have about 10yrs of industry experience and have a Ph.D doing data science.

I've given invited lectures, and consulted for a CV company. People say I am good with people and am nice so I am open to peopley roles too. Please boost <3

A lot of us in the free software space are stinging rn, watching slop worm its way into our communities, tools, perhaps even the philosophy itself. I would delete it all if Apple provided an official way to do it, which they should. I have a secret safe way to make Apple Intelligence never work (don't want to say what publicly, to avoid them noticing and fixing it) but I would like Apple and every other company to acknowledge that a large fraction of us don't want any of this.

I am thoroughly enjoying the podcast by Baldur Bjarnason, specially that episode where he talks about the importance of long form video. If I see a short video, I can be enthusiastic about it and agree wholeheartedly with the presenter and I still cannot reproduce the argument made. The long form video (or podcast) is more at the speed of arguments rather than flashes of imagery and faces. I feel like I can reproduce the argument, like I just did. 😄

Looking at Needle in the Haystack games made me go down the rabbit hole to try to find the original game.

I found 12 games from this year, the earliest was registered on steam in May.

7/12 have been registered on steam in August 2026
3/12 have been registered on the 22nd of August 2026
8/12 I believe have used AI image generation in some part of the game.
1/12 have AI disclosures

I suppose OpenAI gave up on waiting for unspecified bad actors and decided to do the job themselves?

YOU SHOULD NEVER TALK TO FAIRIES WITHOUT A LAWYER

We at Magic Counsel Associates, represent thousands of clients in court cases revolving around wish law. But today I would like to address those who haven't been involved in wish litigation. I would like to talk about why, should a fairy grant you a wish, you need a firm like us and why you should never talk to fairies alone.

Being granted a wish from a fairy might seem like a dream come true, but often, it turns out to be more of a nightmare.

Remember that most of the time, fairies do NOT have your interests at heart. Fairies are known to:

- interpreting vague wishes ("I wish everyone to be happy") in the most horrifying ways

- not fulfilling aspects of the wish which seem obvious although they were unstated (like time travel that doesn't account for the earth moving through the cosmos)

- not caring about consequences for the wish grantee (like granting infinite money without warning the grantee about the attention they will attract from the authorities)

Fairies have also been noted to disregard the European 30-day withdrawal period. Sometimes, they get away with it by surrounding the scene in a surreal impenetrable mist. The mist actually means you've been teleported to Honduras for legal purposes.

BE PREPARED for when a fairy approaches you to grant you a wish. Tell them that you will refuse to talk to them without a lawyer, and ask to call us. Specify that THIS DOES NOT COUNT AS A WISH.

We will represent you and negotiate a wish which takes into account everything that could possibly go wrong. Everything will be made into a clear contract which covers all your grounds.

i need more money. Seriously. My expenses exceed my income. Now, i used to make literally twice as much as i make right now, so it's entirely reasonable to think i could get a better job, but there's a problem: i am a computer programmer and i absolutely despise AI for many, many reasons, and if i had to work with it i think i would burn out fast. i was burned out 3 years ago, even. Quit my job and tried to do indie game dev, but that didn't work out either. Now i am recovered enough to do a regular job again, but AI is just a nightmare. i have no idea what to do. My whole resume is filled with programming, some sysadmin stuff, but those skills are especially rusty.

i guess i'm just ranting into the void, but if anyone has any suggestions for a 57 year old programmer who hates the way the computer industry is going, my ears are open.
